WIA, Workforce Investment Act, in collaboration with St. Clair, provides a wonderful opportunity for students to gain valuable hands-on training and education needed for a competitive job market.
The WIA programs this year include: culinary, health, grounds keeping, and DMT.
In Culinary, Mrs. Gillespie teaches the students food preparation, and jobs similar to that of a restaurant. They will put on a banquet for the WIA participants at the end of the program. Mrs. Negowski teaches another culinary class for four weeks, the students learn what it takes to put on catering events and prepare a meal in a large quantity.
In Health, Mrs. Weston and Mrs. Archer help the students prepare for a career in health. The students participate in either a two week or four week program where they learn basic terms and practices for the health field. They also work at Marwood Manor.
Grounds keeping students learn how to effectively landscape and are working on the RESA campus. This program is lead by Mr. Draper. Mr. Cushion works with his students for four weeks out at Pine River Nature Center in Goodells County.
Ms. Frederick leads the two week Digital Media program. The students learn photography, Photoshop for photography, videography and editing. They work on their writing and presenting skills.
The four week program, run by Mrs. Todaro, covers graphic design and page layout. The students are assigned jobs similar to that in an advertising agency. At the end of the four weeks the students will have put together a yearbook for the WIA students to remember this summer.
There are also students who take classes at SC4.
Along with classroom and hands-on learning, students also break out into groups to learn basic life skills as well as career and school opportunities available to them and participate in job preparation activities.
